The 19th annual Derby Festival Spelling Bee is set for Saturday, March 10, 2012.

In 2011, Emily Keaton of Pike County won her second consecutive Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee by correctly spelling "ankylosaur" - an armor-plated dinosaur - at the PNC Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.  Keaton is a sixth-grade student at Christ Central School in Pikeville, Ky. Sixty-two students from Kentucky and Southern Indiana participated in the statewide competition, going through 216 words before determining a champion.

Keaton received a $10,000 saving bond for winning, as well as a Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, an Amazon.com gift card and a trophy. She also had the opportunity to ride the Winner's Float in the 56th annual Republic Bank Pegasus Parade on May 5.

The Derby Festival Spelling Bee has become one of the Festival's most noteworthy and far-reaching events. The sponsorship of Kentucky Farm Bureau makes the event possible.  84 WHAS is a contributing sponsor.
