Bed RacesREGISTER NOW FOR 2011 Event!

Are the bed bugs after you? Let's hope so, because it's time for the Stock Yards Bank Derby Festival Great Bed Races. An event where you can grab four of your favorite co-workers and race to bed - in a zany kinda way.

A variety of decked-out beds will take to the track at a NEW location this year - the KFC YUM! Center - competing for the fastest times on Monday, May 2. The five-person teams dress in wild and crazy costumes to compete in this wacky task. No sleeping allowed! Thousands of bed-racing enthusiasts gather to cheer on their favorite beds.

In 2010, 52 teams pushed decorated beds on wheels around the track, competing for the fastest times and best decorations.
The Curtain Call Photo Booth team and the Rubbies BBQ teams creativity and speed dominated the "Champions" and "Fun" divisions, respectively, at Broadbent Arena. The Curtain Call team's winning time of 25:16 set a record for the event. A crowd of more 4,000 fans came to cheer on their favorite beds in the 21st annual competition. The theme of last year's Bed Races was "Non-Drowsy Formula" and featured tributes to sleep, rest and medical remedies. The Champions Division showcased some of the event's most veteran competitors and the Dormitory was open all afternoon for tailgating festivities.

Prizes went to the teams with the three fastest times in the Champions and Fun Divisions and the "Best Decorated Bed," "Most Entertaining" and "People's Choice" categories. The People's Choice Award returned for the fifth year in a row, with attendees paying to cast their vote. A total of  $200 was raised in voting, with half the money going to the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation and half to the charity of the winning team's choice.

"Competing in this event is just too much fun," says competitor Bob Johnson "It really brings a feeling of team-spirit among your co-workers."

This crazy event has grown in popularity since its maiden run in 1990 and is the most fun you can have outdoors in your pajamas.

Divisions and Awards
Also new this year, the competition will feature only one division, with both veteran and novice teams participating together.  The races will be shown on the Jumbo Tron screen at the arena.  In addition, two new awards have been added - the "Cone Eater" for most traffic cones mangled during the races and the "Worst New Course Record Time." The teams have an opportunity to showcase their costumes and bed in a pre-race parade, which begins at 6:30 PM.  When racing begins at 7, beds have a great time navigating the course although many do not make it intact through the half-lap run.  More than 40 teams are expected to take to the track for the Stock Yards Bank Great Bed Races.

Award Categories:
  • Best Course Times - 1st, 2nd, 3rd
  • Decoration and Entertainment Awards: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
  • Worst New Course Record
  • Cone Eater Award
  • Best Decorated (Adherence to Theme)
  • Most Entertaining
  • People's Choice Award The Public will be given a chance to voice their opinion.  For $1 a vote, fans can place a vote for their favorite bed.  Proceeds raised will be donated to 2 local charities.  Half of the proceeds will be donated to the  Derby Festival Foundation and will be donated to the 501C3 Charity chosen by the winning bed team.
The First place from each of the 5 divisions will be invited to participate in the Pegasus Parade on Thursday, May 3, 2012.

107.7 WSFR personalities will host the awards. On air personalities from WAVE TV will anchor the live coverage from every angle, from the crowd to the pits.

More Fun!
The Dormitory area will open at 11:30 a.m. to tailgate and make a complete fun filled day.  If you're interested in a little bit of practice before the big race, we will also have practice runs throughout the day.  So come on out, bring your friends and co-workers and have a great time!
