Student Art DisplayArtists in the Making

Thousands of area private, parochial and public school students produce original works of art from their favorite Derby Festival events for the Derby Festival Student Art Contest.  From Thunder Over Louisville to the Great Steamboat Race, the result is an exciting mix of drawings, paintings, collages, and prints.  The kids use watercolor, acrylics, inks, crayon, colored pencils, oil pastels, felt markers or any combination of these.  A panel of local artists selects the winners.

Again in 2012, the Awards presentation for the winning students, parents and teachers will be held in conjunction with the annual Derby Festival Poster Premiere in January at The Henry Clay.

The first place winners in all divisions receive a 2012 framed Festival Poster and a chance to appear with the Festival Winners in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade.  All winners are presented medallions, and a Derby Festival Student Art Contest Winners event pin.

The winning artwork will be on display February 7 - April 27, in Gallery B at Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center.  It will also be on display May 1, 2012 at the Republic Bank Parade Preview Party.  You may just see the work of a future Derby Festival Poster artist!

Parents and students ask your schools' art teacher about entry information for the 2012 event or call the Derby Festival Office at (502) 572-3828. (Deadline for entry is November 18, 2011).
