Artists in the MakingThousands of area private, parochial and public school students produce original works of art from their favorite Derby Festival events for the Derby Festival Student Art Contest. From Thunder Over Louisville to the Great Steamboat Race, the result is an exciting mix of drawings, paintings, collages, and prints. The kids use watercolor, acrylics, inks, crayon, colored pencils, oil pastels, felt markers or any combination of these. A panel of local artists selects the winners.
Again in 2010, the Awards presentation for the winning students, parents and teachers will be held in conjunction with the annual Your Community Bank Derby Festival Poster Premiere in January at The Henry Clay.
The first place winners in all divisions receive a 2010 framed Festival Poster and a chance to appear with the Festival Winners in the 2010 Republic Bank Pegasus Parade. All winners are presented medallions, and a Derby Festival Student Art Contest Winners event pin.
The winning artwork will be on display March 22 - April 26 at Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center. It will also be on display April 27 at the Republic Bank Parade Preview. You may just see the work of a future Derby Festival Poster artist!
Parents and students ask your schools' art teacher about entry information for the 2010 event or call the Derby Festival Office at 502-584-6383. (Deadline for entry is November 19, 2009).
