U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Rush Hour Race

BalloonFest Rush HourThe U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Race is one of Louisville's beloved family traditions.  In 2010, the Derby Festival will again feature both Friday and Saturday morning races.  The multi-race docket gives spectators young and old more chances to take in the exhilarating view of boundless colors and shapes. This year's race will take place on Saturday, April 24.

In 2009, the 34 "Hound" balloons took off from the Kentucky Exposition Center in "chase" of the "Hare" (U.S. Bank balloon, piloted by Scott McClinton). Ten of the chase balloons dropped their bag of Kentucky bluegrass seed within 200 feet of the target, a giant vinyl "X."

Piloting the University of Louisville balloon, Chase Donner came within 11 feet, 7 inches of the target laid out by race sponsor and hare balloon U.S. Bank. Second place finisher Randy Oates, piloting the Arison Insurance balloon, was 13 feet, 6 inches from the target.
