A crowd of over 900 people turned out last night for the first official event of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Festival - the Your Community Bank Poster Premiere - which was held at the The Henry Clay in downtown Louisville. The event was held in conjunction with the Derby Festival Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony. The evening's activities were highlighted by the unveiling of the Derby Festival's 2010 Official Poster, created by James Thornton of Oz Publishing.

The 30th annual Poster Premiere featured cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a complimentary gift for guests. There was also a silent auction of framed 2010 Official Posters and the Limited Edition Poster, as well as the sales kick-off for 2010 Derby Festival Merchandise, which is being produced by All Pro Championships. Art of Framing received the Judge's Award in the annual Framing Contest competition; Brownboro Framing received the People's Choice Award.

The Official Poster was created by Thornton using digital fine art - it is a brush-based piece, free-handed onto a pressure-sensitive screen by various pens and brushes. The poster features a fleur-de-lis and captures horses coming around the racetrack's final turn, with the number 20 and number 10 horses battling toward the finish line. (The numbers on the horses represent the year - 2010.) Both the Official and Limited Edition poster measure 20 by 30 inches. The Official Poster sells for $30; the Limited Edition Poster, which is numbered and signed by the artist, sells for $75. Only 500 of the Limited Edition Posters will be sold. Posters may be purchased online at www.derbyfestival.org and at several area frame shops, including Framer's Supply.

2010 Derby Festival Official Merchandise will be available online at www.derbyfestival.org and several area retailers, including Walmart, Kroger, Taste of Kentucky, Meijer and Liquor Barn. More than 150 items in the merchandise line include: Poster T-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs and glasses; new products such as garden flags, tattoos and a line of eco-friendly products; wearables in sizes and styles for both men and women, young and old; and two new styles of handbags created by Architype, a Louisville-based leather goods designer.

For the fourth year in a row, the Poster Premiere was held in conjunction with the Derby Festival Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony, which is sponsored by Passport Health Plan and contributing sponsor Country Legends 103.9. Students with winning entries in the Art Contest were invited to attend the Premiere. The contest artwork was on display at the Poster Premiere and a collage poster of the winning Art Contest entries was on sale at the event. The winners will have their artwork at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center from March 22 to April 26.

The Poster Premiere is sponsored by Your Community Bank, with contributing sponsors AT&T Real Yellow Pages, Greater Louisville Inc., New Country Q103.1, The Silver Spoon and United Graphics Printing Group.
