The first official event of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Festival - the Your Community Bank Poster Premiere - will be held THIS THURSDAY, Jan. 28, at The Henry Clay, 604 South Third St. The event will be held in conjunction with the Derby Festival Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony, which will take place at 7 p.m. at the venue. The evening's activities will be highlighted by the unveiling of the Derby Festival's 2010 Official Poster, which was created by James Thornton of Louisville.

The 30th annual Poster Premiere is open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m., featuring cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a complimentary gift for the first 1,000 guests. There will also be a silent auction of framed 2010 Official Posters and Festival VIP packages. James will be on hand to sign copies of the 2010 Poster. Tickets for the Premiere are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. They are available online at www.derbyfestival.org or by calling (866) 636-0068. The Poster Premiere is sponsored by Your Community Bank, with contributing sponsors AT&T Real Yellow Pages, Greater Louisville Inc., New Country Q103.1, The Silver Spoon and United Graphics.

Thornton, a Louisville native and in-residence artist for Oz Galleries, said the 2010 Official Poster was his first submission to the Derby Festival. 'I had never submitted any art work to the Derby Festival before,' he said. "It was kind of ironic because I had already started working on a piece and was encouraged by (Framer's Supply president) Michael Sweets to show it to the Festival. I was very surprised when I found out that it had been chosen. Going to the Poster Premiere last year gave me an idea of what it would be like to be the Official Poster Artist, so I was thrilled."

For the fourth year in a row, the Poster Premiere will held in conjunction with the Derby Festival Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony, which is sponsored by Passport Health Plan and contributing sponsor Country Legends 103.9. Students with winning entries in the Student Art Contest will be invited to attend the Premiere. The winners will have their artwork displayed at the Poster Premiere, as well as at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center from March 22 to April 26. A collage poster of the winning Art Contest entries will be available at the event.

Over the years, the Derby Festival's Official Poster Series has become a unique symbol of the community. Past designs decorate offices and homes throughout the city. Peter Max's expressionistic "Bluegrass Pegasus" launched the series in 1981, and a stylistic and geographical mix of artists have been showcased over the years. The signed collector editions continue to significantly increase in value, and the quality of the Poster Series has been recognized worldwide.
