The Kentucky Derby Festival is pleased to announce that 18 charitable organizations took part in the 2010 Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon presented by Walmart on April 24, raising $255,033 for their respective causes - up from $121,000 in 2009. The charities were assisted by the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, the Derby Festival's charitable arm. The KDF Foundation established criteria for organizations to be recognized as Official Charity Partners of the races and Foundation board members and volunteers were assigned as liaisons to help coordinate the fund-raising efforts.

"We're thrilled that these organizations were able to raise a record-setting amount for such deserving charities," said Mike Berry, President and CEO of the Kentucky Derby Festival. "The Derby Festival Foundation's Charity Module committee did a tremendous job recruiting organizations and keeping them motivated and organized. It takes a tremendous amount of work to spearhead these efforts and we're very thankful for everyone involved in helping it come together. The Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation is proud to be part of such an important effort and we hope to build on it every year."

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which raised approximately $115,000 in 2010 - up from $70,000 in 2009 - was named "Charity of the Year" by the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation.

Said Katie Anderson, campaign director for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and its Team in Training: "This was our biggest fund-raiser of the year, so we were very pleased. We sent out about 95,000 brochures to get the word out and we had lots of grass-roots support. We ended up with about 75 total participants and we had runners competing in the full marathon for the first time. It was a great success all around."

In addition to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the following organizations were Official Charities of the 2010 Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon: the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Printing House for the Blind, Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Gilda's Club Louisville, Home of the Innocents, James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies, Kentucky and Southern Indiana Stroke Association, Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, Kosair Children's Hospital, National Hospice Association, Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky, Pitt Academy, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and St. Leo SPICE.

The Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, a 501 C 3 not-for-profit charity, receives and manages charitable contributions on behalf of the Kentucky Derby Festival, Inc., its supporters and the general public. The Foundation perpetuates the Festival's impact on the community by developing projects that highlight the Festival's influence on the area's cultural heritage.  It works to further the Festival's educational and charitable mission through exhibitions and performances.
